Practical Chakra Balancing: Progress, Spiritual Weightlifting and You

This is another blog post like the initial Shamanism post that I had to think about writing.  There are many web pages for working with your Chakras, unfortunately many sites seem to skip many of the details or give a very academic answer.  I hope in this blog to give you many more of the practical details, and more so, what to expect.

If you are using a Hindu metaphor for energy work, I would consider the Chakras work and balancing the equivalent to spiritual exercise.  In Chinese thought, I would consider Gigong to be the same. In both cases, your spiritual health does depend on the exercise to an extent.  Like real exercise, sometimes it is damn difficult to do it, for some of the same reasons.

So first, lets start about what are the Chakras, in my opinionated view.  I have to give the caveat, that I am not a Sadhu or Hindu priest, but I do a fair amount of energy work.

Andrieh's Take on the Chakras

Unlike many systems of metaphysics, the Chakra system has tons of information that is readily available.  A simple google search will produce tremendous information.  What those pages, and the books, often lack is some key details about what to do with them in practice.

In my experience,  the symbol, syllables, sounds and even scents are resonance tools.  The journey will be your own, and that is very important. The 7 Chakras are generally considered the main 7 of the body.  I personally, keep returning to using them.  Sometimes I like the Chinese systems more, but often, I like working with them.  There are more then 7 Chakras, but 7 generally is the main number.

Each Chakra corresponds to an psychic energy vortex that roughly corresponds to that category of psychic energy that is produced by the interaction of the body, mind and spirit.  Like many systems of energy, the Chakra system is a system that maps the subconscious and conscious mind, and the energies that the subconscious mind is producing.   In Eastern thought, this is a reflection that includes the state of the body.  Now,  the Chakras have some interesting properties that are rarely talked about.

First, each Chakra actually has a link to the other Chakras inside it, and can vibrate at a different vibration in some situations.  I like to think of this as a fractal in practice.  No one Chakra can really be thought of existing in isolation from the others.  This point is one that many sites and books miss. In practice, this means that if one Chakra is malfunctioning, it will often effect the other Chakras sometimes in odd unexpected ways. One Chakra might be weaker, and other Chakras might over compensate causing weird personality quirks or even reflecting/creating physical problems.  The above picture gives the general location name and English/Hindu name of the Chakra.

Each Charka corresponds to roughly an area of internal life.  This information is available online and in books.  I provide it here only to make the exercise I am about to give you meaningful.

What each major Chakra does:

Maslow’s Hierarchy of NeedsSeven Chakras
Self-Actualization (morality, creativity, spontaneity, problem-solving, lack of prejudice, acceptance of facts)7th Self-knowledge (soul level), higher consciousness, the greater picture
6th Imagination, awareness, self-reflection, intuition, psychic ability, intelligence, seeing the big picture
5th Power, self-expression, deeper connection to others, truthful (as you understand that speech)
Esteem (Confidence, achievement, respect of others, respect by others)4th Love, self-acceptance, balanced perspective, compassion, self-love, Agape
Love & Belongingness (Family, friendship and sexual intimacy)3rd Willpower, esteem, power and position, personal power
Safety & Security (of body, resources, family, health, employment, property)2nd Order, love and belonging, emotional security
Physiological Needs (Breathing, food , water, air, sex, sleep, homeostasis, excretion)1st Life, survival and safety

Taken and modified from psycentral.com.  Oh, I included the Maslow's Hiearchy of Needs just to give you food for thought as to how these relate to areas of life.

If you have a problem in one of the areas, chances are you can work to improve it by improving the functioning of the Chakra.  Unlike charmed however, the results may take a little time. The Chakras are a metaphor in the form of energy that talks about the interplay of body, mind and spirit.  It's the constant work that changes the spirit, mind and body over time.

Memetic Tools, Oh My
I just really love these Chakra cards.

The cursory information on the Chakras is immense.  There are Hand Mudras, Chakra cards, syllables, mantras,  symbols.   All these things help with resonance.   What is missing most of the time is how and why to put these together for effective self change or even self-progress.

For your reference,  here are some Chakra cards.

Additionally,  here is a link for some hand mudras.

In traditional Hatha Yoga, the 7 cleansing Bija mantras associated with the Chakras are:

Chakra Workout and Putting this Together
Relax and Breathe for a little while.

Start with the Root Chakra.  You an use whatever tools to activate the Chakra you want to.  Hold your hands in Root Chakra, chant the LAM mantra  and stare at the Chakra card.  There are other techniques you can get, more memetic aids from Google.   All of these tools will help you.  These are assistants to the work, not the work.  For the Root Chakra,  notice the area at the base of spine ( perineum) closer to the back.  Pay attention to the area that seems to have a sensation in that area.  See, feel, hear that area slowly moving.    Feel, see, hear that area moving in red vortex.   Now, this is key.  Don't just visualize that area moving.  Feel it, see it, and hear it.   Feel the vortex.    Picture and feel the vortex spinning.  Keep chanting, staring,  holding the Muhdra, or using the other tools.   Slowly concentrate on the area and start to feel and see the Vortex spinning faster and faster in clockwise manner.    Keep spinning the vortex, feeling, and concentrating on the area.  Now when you are spinning the vortex, you will get to a point that there is a tremendous tension.  It almost feels like your whole body tremors and then almost pops.   When I get to the popped level,  my whole body seems to glow in the red, and all seems to be super charged.   Most of the time, spinning at this level will help clear out and repair any issues with the Chakra.   After a few moments, try to go further with this.  Try to spin the Chakra even faster and faster.  This gets progressively more difficult.  Spin the Chakra as fast as you can till you perceive it spinning at light speed (I usually see the Chakra spin so fast it becomes white). This to me feels like the Chakra is working at overdrive, like a sore muscle.  I almost always get the sensation that energy is flowing up into my body from the earth.  I know this isn't stated explicitly in materials, but I have noticed that, and other people have that I work with.  It almost is a temporary hyper-functioning of the Chakra.  The period of hyper-function is great for ritual work, and it absolutely does strengthen the Chakra.   Each time doing this increases the strength of the Chakra and balances things out.  It also touches on and balances the part of the Chakra in the other energy points.

Take a couple breathes. Next, move to the Sacral Chakra.  The procedure is similar to the Root Chakra work.  Use the chants, Hand Mudras and stare at the Chakra pictures to resonate with the Chakra more.  This Chakra is located in the lower abdomen, about 2 inches below the navel and 2 inches in.  Breathe slowly, and consistently.  Use the different memetic tools which will increase the resonance to the Chakra.   Although I did't mention it with the Root Chakra,  this takes a little while for me to center in.  You might take 5-10 minutes of the mantra BIJA work or staring at the Chakra picture while breathing deeply to feel exactly where it is at.  This isn't a hint in books, but in my Reiki practice I have seen it over and over again.  After a while, you'll have the experience and have trained yourself.  Just keep working at that using those tools while concentrating on that general area.  Now as you did with the Root, start to see, feel, and hear the Chakra spinning.  Take note of how it is spinning, as that tells you if there are any issues.  It might be spinning slowly, stopped, or even spinning erratically.   Keep breathing deeply and Concentrate on that area spinning the Chakra in a clockwise manner more quickly.  As the Chakra spins faster, you will notice the irregularities correct themselves.  This may take some time meditating and doing this work.  In meditation, if I am having a problem with a Chakra, it might take a few minutes to speed up the Chakra with intention.  This is all part of the process.  The Memetic tools such as the hand gestures and mantras do help build up the speed.  As with the Root Chakra, you will get to a point in speed where it seems to pop.  For me, it's like I am so resonant with the Chakra, that the other Chakras ( and other minor Chakras too), start to resonate at the vibration of the Chakra.  Keep going past this point, till you are spinning the Chakra at light speed (and usually it become whiter for me).  This takes some practice to do.   It won't be instantaneous if you are really doing the work and it might feel alot like hard exercise.  You will get a little tired.

Next move to the Solar Plexus Chakra.  In the last two examples we pretty much covered the how to.  The Solar Plexus Chakra is located just below the navel at the Solar Plexus.  This Chakra is related being our own sun.  Again, use the various tools to build resonance with the Chakra so you can really feel where it is.    For the Solar Plexus Chakra, use a yellow sunlike vortex.  Again spin this clockwise and really feel it, not just visualize it.   Again, if it is spinning erratically, you may need to spend a few minutes with this, to really get the resonance and get it spinning.  Remember to go past the pop point of spinning, till its spinning at light speed.

Next move to the Heart Chakra.  The Heart Chakra is located near the center of the breastbone or sternum.  Again, use the various tools to build resonance with the Chakra so you can really feel where it is.    For the Heart Chakra, use a green vortex (some people will see and use pink).  Again spin this clockwise and really feel it, not just visualize it.   Again if it is spinning erratically, you may need to spend a few minutes with this, to really get the resonance and get it spinning.  Remember to go past the pop point of spinning, till its spinning at light speed.

Next move to the Throat Chakra.  The Throat Chakra is located in the throat.  Again, use the various tools to build resonance with the Chakra so you can really feel where it is.    For the Throat Chakra, use a blue vortex.  Again spin this clockwise and really feel it, not just visualize it.   Again if it is spinning erratically, you may need to spend a few minutes with this, to really get the resonance and get it spinning.  Remember to go past the pop point of spinning, till its spinning at light speed.  This Chakra is one of self expression, and is often difficult for many people.

Next move to the Third Eye Chakra.  The Third Eye Chakra is located between the eye brows.  Again, use the various tools to build resonance with the Chakra so you can really feel where it is.    For the Third Eye Chakra, use a purple vortex.  Again spin this clockwise and really feel it, not just visualize it.   Again if it is spinning erratically, you may need to spend a few minutes with this, to really get the resonance and get it spinning.  Remember to go past the pop point of spinning, till its spinning at light speed.  This Chakra is one that in our gogogo lifestyles, well this is a harder one to see the bigger picture, analysis, and intuition.

Next move to the Crown Chakra.  The Crown Chakra is located it is located either at the crown of the head or just above.    This Chakra is the connection point of the female Shakti Power to the Shiva currents.  Essentially, this is the direct line to the divinities when you separate out the various ideas around this.  This is the point of consciousness itself, and quite possibly the seat of the soul/KIA/etc.  As with all the Chakras, there are more mysteries then I can cover in the blog, but with the Crown Chakra this is doubly true.  Again, use the various tools to build resonance with the Chakra so you can really feel where it is.    For the Crown Chakra, I use a white vortex, but I know people who have used a rainbow or prismatic vortex, or even a violet color.  Again spin this clockwise and really feel it, not just visualize it.   Again if it is spinning erratically, you may need to spend a few minutes with this, to really get the resonance and get it spinning.  Remember to go past the pop point of spinning, till its spinning at light speed which for this Chakra is the easiest usually.  At first for me, the hardest part of the Crown Chakra work is actually feeling it and feeling the energy cycle.  It takes a little time, but when you get it going and connect the resonance's it seems to spin up very quickly.

Once you have gone through all the Chakras in this manner, then go through them a second time, but try to hold each Chakra in mind.  Starting at the Base Root Chakra and working up and spinning each one up to light speed (aka spinning so fast, they go to pure light).  Hold each Chakra in mind and spinning at the same time.

This creates a column of light within the energy body where all Chakras are being fully activated and in a way in hyper-fuctioning mode.  In essence, this builds and heals the energy body as each of the spinning Chakras at the same time, it will clear out the energy channels.  This is a GREAT starting point for additional ritual work that will combine both the elements of heaven and earth.  I try to get to this state and hold it for as long as I can or if I am doing other ritual work, move on to that.  The entire process is a very effective banishing.

Doing the Chakra work in this way can take 30-40 minutes ( or more if you are having some trouble spots), but I promise, the results are fantastic for magic and physical improvement.

Need more info on the Chakra's try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chakra  which is surprisingly good for Wikipedia.

What this does over time
Although not explicitly stated, this has the similar effects to doing the LBRP and Middle Pilar in ceremonial magic.  Essentially, it clears out every Chakra, and the body and the energy system while strengthening the energy system.  For a day or so after doing this, the Chakra will function at better then normal and degrade   if no additional practice is completed.  If you keep doing this, the Chakras will function at a better then normal as the new normal increasing the flow and availability of spiritual and physical energy.  As a daily practice, it is a powerful tool and the daily practice of it can start to cause movement on physical conditions. Now, of course, this can be combined with other tools such as CD's, meditative bells, oils, crystal bowls, tuning forks etc.  All of these tools will help to increase resonance with the Chakra.  I have not found that any of the tools are enough without really putting intention behind them and the exercise given seems to work extremely well when combined with those tools  (it works well by itself too).  This exercise is what I use to really build up the Chakras after a difficult period.

A couple key points, I know some books will say that you should spin the Chakra's counterclockwise to deal with excesses in a Chakra (thus releasing energy).  I do not agree entirely unless it is a really severe excess.  There is both an ascension style magical reason, and magical power reason I say that.  First, instead of releasing the energy or calming down a Chakra, increase the intensity that the other Chakras can operate at.  It is the flow and balance that really in my humble opinion creates the great power.   Working to increase the intensity of the other Chakras can be slightly harder, but it does create balance and it creates a new energy balance that in general forces spiritual evolution or at least an increase in magical power.   Second, the spinning done this way will help heal improperly functioning Chakras, including Chakras which need to take in outside energy (possibly from other people).  Simply put, the hyper-spinning will work to correct structural issues in the energy system but it does take a little more time.

If you need some help with some techniques of meditations or what to improve your skill, check out my first book  Hands-On Chaos Magic: Reality Manipulation through the Ovayki Current.  If you need some help working to balance out or improve your own Chakra functioning, feel free to contact me at andriehvitimus@gmail.com and book an appointment.  In addition to these techniques, I can work with you through hypnosis, metaphor and distance energy work to help increase your Chakra's effectiveness.

Shamanic Soul Retrieval and the Lies of the Greedy

I am mostly easy to get along with.  I believe people should be able to make money doing whatever honest combinations of metaphysics they deem appropriate.  Just because a set of magical techniques might be a combination of other techniques, I would be the first to tell someone, “Great Job on the innovation and combination.” What I absolutely HATE, is when people try to sell techniques as ancient that clearly are not and hide the root derivations of the techniques they are using.  I am going to talk about Soul Shard retrieval in particular, what this means, and why most neo-shamanist approach are simply put Hypnosis.  BTW, I LOVE hypnosis an immense amount.  My  issue is there is a level of mastery and skill required to do this the way I learned things from my family and several teachers.  The different skill level and mastery required to do these techniques will be obvious, and why it is important that we as a community demand far more honest responses about the origin and use of some of these techniques.   I am going to specifically give details about soul-shard retrieval from both the neo-pop manner which is effective for many cases and the more difficult way I was taught.  I recommend that if you are using either technique, that you practice it several times before using it with another person.

What is a soul retrieval, or better soul shard retrieval.  The idea of a soul shard retrieval is that every traumatic event tears a piece of the soul of the shaman and does not allow for them to fully access their own power.  This technique is probably the most known technique associated with neo-shamanic thinking.  Soul shards can happen as a direct result of spiritual forces ( aka a magical attack ), emotional trauma or severe physical trauma( because of the emotional element).    The concept of a soul shard IS NOT universal to all shamanism any more then the concept of a world tree is.  However, because of Harner's Core Shamanism and the spin off drive to "make money off shamanism ideas", these concepts are considered "universal".  They are not universal and Harner are often not doing it in the way that develops the spiritual power of the practitioner because for the most part there "is no spirit".  The need and nescasity of spirit along with the difficulty of shamanic practice has mostly been abstracted away in a deluge of modernity.  Anthropologists have already weighed in on Harner in a negative way, so I need to go no further.  In a way they should correctly be called psychological, hypnotic or metaphor therapy and most importantly they do WORK.   Many people will get benefits from using these techniques, however, the purpose and emphasis is so far from what I believe most shamanism was about, that it is not the same.

The soul shard idea however, is one that my family and Reiki trainers did stress.  In practice, it is a pretty dangerously powerful idea as I learned it.  Pop shamanism assumes the soul shard is merely an energy block or lost energy.  This, however, is not a well-defined notion.  What does it mean to have lost energy?  For pop psychological shamanism, this means there is a negative psychological habit that can be solved using a psychological technique of cognitive reframing usually implemented by regressing the subject within creative visualization.  If that process sounds a lot like hypnosis that is because it is.   Put a shaman's dress on that and you often have shamanic training.  If you believe that there are no spirits, and that is actually all shamans did, you might be convinced also of the innate savagery and ignorance of indigenous people as well.  No one wants to say that, because it’s fashionable to hate the modern world but love the assumptions in the modern world.

But there are a couple very strong beliefs that you could derive when you actually study anthropology on shamanic thought.  First, most cultures have a real and nuanced believe in spirits.  Spirits are real, and they can exist inside and outside you, sometimes at the same time.  Often times, it is the relationship that gives the Shaman strength.  Second, a shaman would use ecstatic states to find the solution for the tribe or the individual.
Ecstatic states, sounds fantastic right?  I think so and I love them, however it was clear from the social structure and literature that not everyone had the ability to safely sustain the ecstatic states. Shamans were usually considered slightly odd and most would live on the outskirts of society.   Once the pandora’s box is opened, a person might very well have difficulty seeing the world in the same light.  Modern day psychonauts experience this, as do magicians, meditators and witches.   Sure many shamans would interact with the indigenous societies they were part of  but in a way they were outside of those cultures.  In the context of the modern world, that has no role for the shaman, ecstatic states might very well break someone’s ability to function in the “real” world.  The notion that everyone did this or that everyone should, simply is not historically supported nor is it supported in my own experience.  Real ecstatic states have the consequence that they change your mind, and that is very inconvenient in a highly mechanized society.

Now, I personally do not like the word Shaman, because the word should really be used in the context of a specific area in Siberia, but everyone generally knows what I mean.

So back to the soul shard retrieval.

The Neo-Shamanic Way:

Many people have told me that how they were taught to do a Soul Shard Retrieval was to guide the client back in time, have them relieve the traumatic experience, and either keep them going back to the experience which releases the trauma, or use another metaphor to help release the trauma.  In fact on Deeper Down the Rabbit Hole, I have had a few shamans tell me this method.  Each time I cringe.  This is formally called Regress To Cause and is a pretty well established hypnotic technique.  It is also amazing effective.  The technique originally derives from Freudian analysis although modern hypnosis can make this go faster.    This technique is very effective, and often I myself will use the technique.  It is not however, a shamanic technique.

You could use get most of the self-visualize skills needed for this technique and put it into a usable context from Hands-On Chaos Magic: Reality Manipulation through the Ovayki Current , but if you know something about self hypnosis, it really is akin to something like

1.   Go into Hypnosis/Trance
2.   Go Deeper into Trance
3.   Flow back into time possibly through a journey through the underworld ( or other             metaphor of world travel, for neo-shamanism).
4.  Method 1 ( which I do not like as much) Go to original trauma, keep repeating till the        person gets desensitized
5.  Method 2:  Use a metaphor to transform the event

Now in a neo-shamanic context, the metaphor is almost always power animals or something akin to a mystical metaphor.  These can be effective metaphors.

Andrieh’s Way:

To me this does not meet the criteria of an Ecstatic journey.  It is very safe, and sometimes does not work.  It also removes the role of the shaman in the tribe.  Because we do not have tribes anymore, many experts will claim it is a good thing.  I do not agree.  It would be better if all the experts argued for a tribe again!!!  Putting a mystical spin on the very useful technique serves a purpose to aggrandize the technique.

Let’s assume for a minute, that spirits are real.  Let’s further assume for a minute that it is possible to splinter off part of your own essence.  Let’s also assume that part could in fact gain its own intelligence and possibly act on its own (since it is separated from the person).  Let’s further assume (and this is backed up by a lot of experience), that if a spirit had “gathered” that part it would have influence over the person, or possibly could continually draw more energy from the person.

Now, with this there are more possibilities of what could happen:

The part is trying to survive on its own, or has been so rejected by the person that it is trying to function as its own entity.  It may have had some success, and now would not easily be re-assimilated.

The location of the shard is completely unknown to the person and might have been lost astral travelling during dream work, or magical attacks.

From a different perspective, the person can work through the psychological issues, and the fragmentation is mostly a psychological issue.

The part has been “claimed” or is being controlled by another entity or set of entities.

Worse, the person made some sort of deal with some spirits, and there is a debt attached to the part of the essence.

There are probably multiple other possibilities.  I have in my experience seen the five above (and variants).  The Neo-Pop method most easily deals with problem 3, but ignores the other possibilites.

Now, part of the difficulty of the process is you never know what you are going to get.

So what I do:

1. Banish and cleanse my space.  I always feed the Ancestors and the Lwa too, and ask their protection (one does not really know what your going to get).

2. Using the energy sampling technique from Hands-On Chaos Magic: Reality Manipulation through the Ovayki Current   I take a bit of the person’s energy.  Mostly this is so I can get a strong impression of the real person.  It is not sufficient to accept your beliefs about the person, you need to dive in deep.

3. I will spend a good 30 minutes, just meditating with the person and their energy. Usually, I will ask the person to just sit still and breathe.  If I have any confusion, I will use divination to give me hints and suggestions while allowing my spiritual allies to offer suggestions.

4. I will then will launch myself to my astral stronghold (Hands-On Chaos Magic: Reality Manipulation through the Ovayki Current  has the basics of this) and then allow the piece of the person to guide me in my journey.  When I have done this, I usually am so deep into trance that if people try to wake me to suddenly,  it jars me.

5. Whatever happens, I run with the journey.  If I am brought to an aggressive spirit (such as a demon), I ask it what claim it has to the part (if any).  Usually even an aggressive or negative spirit, if it has a fair claim, will say so in my experience.  Otherwise they just growl at you or try to hit you.  If negotiation is possible, in the journey, I sit and negotiate for the person.   Even if it is a part of themselves that has been denied, I will negotiate.  Expressing love and support, and pulling that part back with me to the room, holding it with me.  If it’s a spirit that will not release it, I will fight for the person, to take it back (and sometimes that gets a little rough).   If the person is themselves skilled at this, they might be there with me, as it is possible to have multiple people on a journey, but it does take a little coordination. Sometimes a person has made a deal with a spirit when they were young as in a child (and they were tricked), and you just have to appeal to things like the Lwa, Guides, spirits and Angels to help fight for the person.  The person’s ancestors are GREAT too, if they are close enough and willing to help.  No matter, either a solution is found in the journey (a psychological metaphor to get the person better), or the shard comes back with the me (the hard or easy way).

6. Once the shard is back, I will use all the various techniques of sorcery, ceremonial magic, and Reiki to cleanse the shard of any impurities.  Often I will use a bottle, altar or even crystal as a temporary decontamination center.  This is really important, since if it has been with a hostile entity, there is a good chance that it will need healing.  Do the healing before integrating anything.  Keep the person in meditation.  If the shard has been rejected, I walk the client through mantra work and hypnosis to reintegrate the parts that I have retrieved usually by saying I love and I accept you.  If you need help with this, again, Hands-On Chaos Magic: Reality Manipulation through the Ovayki Current  has a ton of suggestions to work with shards of yourself.  The methodologies work with shards of other people as well.

7. Once cleaned, or accepted, the shard should energetically be moved over the person.  At this point, the person should say I love and accept you as they fell the parts re-integrating.  At this point, liberal use of healing modalities should occur on the person.  This could include Bathwork, Reiki, Prana work, angel work… but it should happen.

8. Again, I would use divinations to advise a course of action and double check the work.  The course of action particularly things the person should avoid is important.  The last thing I want to do is do exactly the same journey, if it was difficult.

Now, in practice, a shaman can get a lot of information from the Journey and as you get better with the technique, some of the information can get quite detailed.  It is not uncommon to find the person’s spiritual allies giving suggestions or an Ancestor pop up and have something to say that needs to get transmitted back to the person, because it is important.  Sometimes, the shard itself will come back with new information, having changed, and the integration process will cause the person to develop new abilities.  Sometimes, even going on the journey, and working the journey fixes other things in the person’s life just because the steps rework the person’s energy at very low levels.  The journey is not always to some far flung astral world.  Sometimes you are journeying to their microcosm.

Now using the technique I outlined requires a few pre-requisites
The ability to maintain deep trance states possibly using different methods of trance.
Spiritual allies are helpful
More then basic energy manipulation skills
Understanding of protecting your own space
Astral Travel
Hypnosis is very useful in the integration stage.
Self-Healing techniques
Some divination skill

Most of these techniques are covered in Hands-On Chaos Magic: Reality Manipulation through the Ovayki Current   but I would anticipate that someone would have worked through most of the book before they could confidently pull off this technique.  Now, before doing this for someone else, PLEASE, PLEASE, use this technique on yourself.    Seriously, get it down on yourself before even THINKING about doing it on someone else.  IT is a risky method.

Now I want to say, the Regress to Cause is a powerful and effective technique.  I use this all the time.  It really is a great technique.  My issue isn’t that those techniques are being used; my issue is that people are putting marketing over honesty.  This places the bar far too low for the skills we “shaman” should be developing and is a disservice to what we could achieve.

Floatation Tank Madness in Cleveland no less: Dissolve Adverse Reactions

Good enough for Timothy Leary
So I went over to the Optimal Wellness Center and they had a floatation tank.  Of course, being me, I decided to float.  This isn't my first time floating in an isolation tank, but I havent had access to one in a long time.

So before I got in to the experience, I thought I would give a little bit of information on Optimal Wellness Center in Lakewood Oh.  This is a nice clean place.  If your in Cleveland, its worth going to.  My complaints partially stem from it being too sterile/medical.    They are great at keeping things efficient and the water levels consistant.  I really miss the little extras like I got at Space Time Tanks in Chicago.  Stuff like red light dimmer so you come out and its not like light system shock.  Essential Oil diffusers and some meticulously laid out altar like decorations).  Of course,  if you went on the wrong day at Space Time, the water levels were just off enough so your butt would touch the bottom.   It makes a big difference when you have the build of a Offensive lineman or Biker dude.   One inch of water is killer.

They make you sign a waiver of course basically stating if you loose your shit, its your problem and second don't do any Timothy Leary/Altered States ass shit in there, not that I would ever do some Timothy Leary type experiments... Me. No... Never.. Absolutely Not, inconceivable.  Just would never happen.  Got to be someone else, who might do that.

My experience was weird this time.  I stepped in their and immediately had all these bullshit concerns.  What if the water got in my ears and hurt my sinuses?  What if this happened?  Mind you, I am not a noob, I have done this before several times.  It has been a rewarding experience every time.  And as I said, there was no Timothy Leary experiments going on, seriously.

I close the door on the Floatation Talk and get lay in the water.  I literally FREAK out.  I have a pretty heavy viseral, and hard core panic attack.  I am neither claustrophobic or afraid of the dark.  Your fine narrator, Papa Vitimus however, does not really give in to that.  I had the tools, technology, magic and Will.

Although an isolation tank may amplify the reaction, this can happen in meditation, in hypnosis, in breath work, or even Gigong.  I being me, was absolutely going to get in the tank and enjoy it.

What is an Adverse/Ab-Reaction Reaction?

What I had, was in hypnosis terms called an abreaction.  Before going into the tank, I performed a Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram and then Prayed to Papa Legba to keep me safe.  I have on occasion went on a astral journey that wasn't complete safe.   While its possible to have a real spiritual encounter while in the tank, that isn't what initially happened to me here.

Before I continue, I have to give a little background as to help you, my most excellent reader, understand the what and why of an adverse reaction.  I have been under enormous stress do to a situation well to be blunt, is really my friend's major issue.  It is not a thing that I can easily walk away from.  This stress has been really taken its toll physically and there were other issue that lead into a reaction.  What I do is center, ground, and keep the chrakra's working.  I also have this little trigger, I call it the overload trigger.

The overload trigger, is a "this situation is too hard for a human to deal with", so simply any negative emotion ( and some positive ones ), just go to off.  This kinda of thing lets me power through difficult situations cool headed.  It works 99.9% of the time, since I do not add to the situation, and seek out clear headed resolution, find the opportunity for the road to a different situation.  If you focus on the bad, you miss the road.  In this case, I had been doing that sort of, let's just turn this off for a while, for way too long.

Relax, rest, recover you say.  Oh really. My subconscious mind would HAVE none of that.  Fully supported by the water in a dark place, F@#@$# that.  Basically, the universe is a nasty place, people are horrible cruel monsters and you  know that Andrieh.  Its like being told, no... your still in SIEGE mode and you still need to be in near adrenal land.  Hence,  red flag on field and the strong panic attack.   Did I mention, I had been doing this, just turn it off for a while.

Why the Adverse Reaction?

You wont like my subconscious mind
when its angry.
Pretty clear, that I can turn off the experiencing of those negative and frustrating for a pretty long time, it does work.  In this case, relax and rejuvenate was the mind was objecting too.  Because in a elevated stress state, I will adapt.

The Adverse reaction in meditation, Gigong, isolation tank visits or any of it, is a pretty clear message, that something isn't right in Demark.  I do not agree, that that is the time to end the session... No, now its time to do some heavy lifting and keep going.  This moments are real opportunities for transformation if you can stay with it. To me the reaction itself, was an opportunity for real change, so I took it.

The why of this is pretty simple.  The subconscious mind believes you either need something you are trying to get rid of, or that what you are doing will lead to certain DOOM.  It is in essence protecting you from yourself or you have hit a patch of badlands in the psyche.  A patch that can have little to do with what you are trying to do but might correlate to what work you have been doing.  It just doesnt have to be a linear cause and effect.

Transforming the Adverse Reaction

So in this situation what do you do.  Surprisingly, the single biggest trick is to breathe.  Realize a panic attack or adverse reaction cannot last forever.

Step one, own it and keep going.
Admit, hmmm, this is not a conscious thing and it is from and by myself. In the tank, I forced myself not to move at all.  I sat up, put my butt on that floor and breathed.  I almost got out of the tank a couple times, but reminded myself, STAY on point.  It was me and by me.  The tank wasn't flawed.  The water wouldn't destroy my sinuses, and it wasn't so cold ( 94 degrees), that I would get hypothermia.  All of these are reactions and basically mental tricks to from the subconscious to get you to move.  Ride it out.

Step two:  Relax your way out of it.
Usually, just force yourself to sit still, breathe, and use all 5 of your senses to calm each muscle down.    Literally just focus on each muscle.
I cover this more extensively in

Energy Work, Meditation
Enchantment, Spirit Work
Yes its in there.

I did exactly this and proceeded to progressively relax each body part in the darkness.  I won't lie, I am pretty experienced at meditation and it still took me a good 5-10 minutes.  My breathing calmed down as did the visceral reaction.

Step three:  Keep going and Adapt in your meditation
Now, the ab-reaction is over, the meditation needs to continue.
Usually, when you get through the reaction you'll have other issues that pop up, and clarify the issue.
For me, I neck really hurt and different body parts hurt.  Like excessive stress and wear and tear from stress.  It didn't take long for me to realize that the continuing stress was having a negative impact.  That should be obvious, but when your under-siege you can work on adrenaline for a while.
In this case, the understanding was obvious but in other cases you might get a flash of something horrible that may or may not have happened   Its a clue.  I got tons of body issues ( and later in the meditation concluded it was Root Chakra issues (too much threatening of survival).  The important part is that you listen to all your senses for a clue.  If you are meditating, stay in the context (aka the room), ask yourself for some clues as to what is going on.

Step Four:  Actionable meditative steps
If presented with an imagine of sadness, focus on joy and love.  If there is a black ooze on your body  in your mind, concentrate or feeling that wash away in light.  Use all of your five senses, to really see, feel and know it gone.  Basically, use the opposite steps depending on the metaphor.  If their is a part of you giving you the metaphor, its also asking for a solutions.  Pay close attention.  Usually the reaction will start or be more severe in certain parts.  If you can isolate those, those are the areas that you use to really focus on.    Now, it would take me large parts of a book to really get into producing an emotional energy and focus.  Kinda like this book, right here.
Yes, I should really
finish writing a  new
book.

An easy way is too simply focus on those body parts and remember times you felt the emotion.  See, feel, hear them and then imagine if all those sensations.  Even laughing, or smiling is usually sufficient to start working through the energy issues.  If a hostile form (which could be a metaphor or a spirit) steps in, simply imagine it dissolving in the light, or whatever is appropriate.  Again Fire dissolved by water, darkness by light, cold by heat, and so forth.  That might take a little while.  In an Isolation Tank, everything really is amplified.   Since I was giving mostly physical aches and pains, I focused on Reiki work and did the Reiki work to the extend that I was loosing tract of time.   For me, the idea is to work toward a certain stillness while in the tank, then you might have an OOB or other experiences.

While I was in the tank, stray thoughts would enter my mind, really why I was so upset.   They were related.  I would practice my zen meditation technique and acknowledge the thought and let it go.    Sometimes, I would get uncomfortable or a body part would ache.  Reiki till was comfortable and move on.    Time would pass very quickly then.  In the tank as I was clearing out the ache areas, I would soon after have somewhat strong Kundalini responses and the energy would spike up and through my whole body ( which with the water around, I was able to cool down).

Then in my mind, I was finally clear of the stray thoughts and SEE a clear image of an Ogun, and a non-verbal "get on this" aka work on getting the stress down, so you have better vitality.  Took the whole session to get there.  Not 2 minutes after,  knock knock. times up.

It happens.  Afterwords I felt very refreshed, and I would love to build one of the Floatation tanks in my home.

There is several lessons from this story, besides the obvious of deal with stress better.   First, these reactions are a way for the body to process shit, and detox it fast.   Take the opportunities, don't let the reaction stop you. Thats exactly what happened to me.  Second, just because you are meditating and doing what you think you need to, do not think that negative situations do not take their toll.  More stressful and toxic situations require possibly greater action.  Third, use the meditation tools itself to unravel the issues further, till you get clarity.

It Really Never Was, Do Whatever You Want For Me

Hmm What is Truth? What the hell is everyone
Arguing about all the time.
So I recently got some props on a Hoodoo board, that my book really was a great book for the highly individual person who has to come up with their own way.  I kinda didn't think of my book as that, but I can accept the compliment.

There's a whole bunch of random thoughts that together will probably get me in trouble.  First, I am always pretty somewhat amazed by all the wonderful comments on the internet that talk about "Chaos Magic" and "Look how these Chaos magicians seek out real training".  Jack Faust is one "Chaos magician"  like myself that has sought out formal initiations.  We can leave the usefulness of those to the reader, however this is used to somehow hold up the system as "useless."  First, the problem is that it was never a system despite what people do on the internet.  It is a meta-system to start.  Second, often in the same BREATH these critics are doing things that they are claiming are great innovations that are not traditional.  I know, the almighty buck calls and no-one wants to be actually admit they made things up when they are trying to sell people services.  Its much more impressive to "lean on" traditional thought and be an Atlantian Empowered Soceror of Darkness.... or whatever.

Besides this annoyance on the internet, I have been asking the hard question of traditional practices versus non-traditional practices.   Not the simple questions.  I know both work already, but require different things to work.  I would be the first to admit, that the innovation and construction path seems alot harder.  It is very easy to work with the Lwa who gets results most of the time.  Do the song, with the service, and it works.  I love them.   It really is that easy if you know what spirits walk with you.  The religion itself is very beautiful and has much to learn.   I really love it.  So why ask questions about the explanations of things.  About what the hell is really going on, why does any of it work... Not just the what to do, Why, what is going on?  Why does any of this magic stuff work?  What is the nature of the universe that allows for this?

In Quantum Voodou, Reginald Crosley, I think started to ask the kinds of questions I wanted to ask about Vodou and the Lwa when they called to me.  The praxis or stories of any tradition, over one layer of what, but not the seemingly deeper layers. Remember the traditions are based and taught to people with different brain structures, training, and even linguistic traditions.  There is a vested interest in the priest caste (and it is usually people coming to the traditions outside of their natural culture) that so vehemently and aggressively defend "tradition". The answer to these kinds of questions that do not,  in fact, come from a very scientific culture is often so simplistic and more or less because I said so.

There just seems to be something unsatisfying with the idea that "the spirits" are real, and thus, they work.  Equally unsatisfying is the "it's all in your head" explanation.  The advent of the internet should really have forced the more traditional "practitioners" into existential terror.  Outside of all the "terror" and games to keep people in line, people do just fine outside of the traditional methods.  In some cases, a mentor really does help a TON, but in enough cases it's an abuse problem.  Once burned, people seem do to just fine.  They grow and get better.  But the single question of why and how does the universe work, falls apart in an integrative culture.  It goes from "because I told you so" to how does it work across multiple Conflicting Truths?

This, my friends, is the Faustian like question that has always driven the Chaos magical current.  How can this work, when we have so much access to information?  The notion that Chaos magic is "idiots doing whatever", just does not pan out.  Neither does Jason Miller's idea ( and I love him), that Chaos magic is unfulfilling since everyone seeks out "real training".  That is not the point.  Chaos magic was never meant to be filling, it was meant to, in a way, answer this integral question of post cultural stew. The grand narrative provides meaning, but the meaning is one we accept and choose.  Still the Universe will merely reflect back to us and has mechanics to do so, of course, some of us are going to settle down and do one thing for a long while. It does work better to stay in one system a while to do that.  But the Faustian question remains....  and its a question that GNAWS AT ME.

This problem is even worse, when you start looking at why magic works at all.  In fact, how you believe magic works makes a stunningly awesome correlation to how it usually works.  Believe in spirits, and all of sudden things happen that look like spirits are "helping."  Think it's all in your mind, and everything becomes insight driven.  Really, time and time again, the "universe" simple refuse to be classified, contained, or otherwise Truth-ed.  It's pretty bad about that as well.  Try it for a few weeks and then switch a belief and really get into it.  You sit in a Existential confusion and basically come to the conclusion that the Universe just wants to fuck with you.   When you get over that, then the question remains, what the hell is going on here?  These mechanisms are really only able to be studied from a cross cultural point of view, because any singular culture will have a bias that limits explanation   Every individual will also be biased and limited, but at least we acknowledge and know that.   The single historical fact is that many of the "clinging to tradition" is probably a reaction to the speed that the stew would mix.  Before the information age, there would be a lag time that the the human mind can deal with regarding the mixing. Sorry, welcome to the future.  When the machines start conversing metaphysics with us, then we really will have a conundrum about the belief about our specialness as well.

"Why are we fighting to save the humans? They're a primitive and violent race."

Why does these competing ideologies work?  and when you go deeper.... Why does EVERY metaphor of the way the universe work prove itself correct?  Once internalized enough, even CRAZY metaphors and stories work just fine.  Chaos magicians settled on that "Their May be no Ultimate Truth" solution. In fact, I tried the truth thing when I started... It didn't work out so well.  Always contradictions.  I just gave up on it.   Even got initiated, and I love initiations,  but even in Vodou every house has VERY significant differences.  Those differences form a Cultural internal bond that is insanely useful but hardly could you call a difference based on group culture Truth.

In the same way those who hold up the Grimores as the final answer are equally in a questionable intellectual landscape giving the amount of information we have.  Same system of magic, VERY different implementation.  The dreaded Goetia.  For example, Dr. Rudds Goetia is not at all the same as the Golden Dawn which is not the same as OTHER Medieval magicians books on the Goetia.  What the hell is going on here?  Its pretty clear that these books are almost the working books of magicians?  AKA Lab notes they developed over time.

Keep in mind, I for one find traditional training to be quite rewarding.  I simply don't equate that with Truth, nor needfully better.  Nor do I buy the this is absolutely the way to do this.  Let's take Acupuncture, my associate +Zachary Lui is really an expert on this.  Acupuncture as is taught is in-fact, from Communist China.  Look at the Taiwanese acupuncture, and their are so many differences and in fact the Acupuncture seems like it is based on completely different principles.  How can different acupuncture work?    He quoted numerous German studies to the effect that states the different Acupuncture system show strong believe effects.  Again, the universe merely reflects our beliefs back at us.  Its quite humorous, first because of the belief effects really question a lot of western medicine and at same time question Chinese medicine, and at the same time question all the assumptions of mechanisms of consciousness and the body.  Again the universe does not seem to care one bit.

I can respect the desire for tradition.  This is a desire for cultural stability and the diving into a singular system generates a compelling self-story that does effectively train the subconscious mind. The magic does work, and the I told you so is EFFECTIVE, but never does it answer that gnawing question when you have access to multiple streams of information.  Nor does it mean the person is more right (even though they claim to be, see acupuncture and different Goetia examples).   I can get all the hate mail in the world, still not going to convince me people are right.  They just like the comfortable zone and I can appreciate it.  The comfort zone still does not answer these kinds of questions outside of one system.  I still believe, effectiveness is your only measure of correctness, regardless of what cultural assumptions we try to cling to.

Trench Coat Magic, ok.. all Leather Magic ( Van Van Oil and More).

I Love trench coats, So This Blog is about
Trench Coat Magic

I love my leather.   Always have and I love trench coats.  Its so unfortunate that some jerks did bad stuff who happened to own a trench coat.   I used to and still love my Motorcycle Jackets.  Leather is just nice.  Now if you talk to some people, really, the  leather jacket becomes something like a second skin.  A modern day leather armor against the world.  From the rebellious, to the straight out practical ( Trench coats buffer the wind and Motorcycle jackets do act as a protector against road damage).    These type of jackets are already Iconic.

Did I mention, I love trench coats.  How does this relate to magic? Indulge me a little.  Now, such an Iconic piece of clothing ( either a motorcycle jacket or trench coat), has so much speculation, so much mystery, or such a bad boy image associated with it that it is already special.  It has special meaning and I suspect that to the people who love those sorts of jackets, the Jacket is much more like a second skin a I mentioned.  It is a ripe and wonderful tool to increase the specialness of the Jacket.

First, Let's take the Jacket as a literal second skin, a type of armor.  A easy way to build in more magical properties is to attach a intention to the jacket for protection.    Here is an idea that I use when I get a new jacket.  Grab some Van Van Oil. Center, Ground, relax.  Breathe deeply as possible.  Take a rag, and meticulously oil the Coat with Van Van Oil.  As you do this, use your five senses to see, feel, hear, and smell the coat coming alive.  If you are sensitive to energy, push energy into the coat.  Its not enough to "push energy", love the coat.  Really, spend time with the coat, breathing deeply, and feeling the coat and you becoming one.    At that point, you believe the coat is alive, keep going.  Breathe deeply and run with it.  Ask the coat to protect you.    Keep oiling the coat with love.    If you are really deep into a trance state, you might even get a name for the coat or a sigil.  Inscribe this on the inside of the coat, near where your shoulders and neck would meet.  I will usually sew the name or sigil into the fabric inside the coat.

There is a few whole chapters on how to make a servitor with immense detail on various aspects of this in Hands On Chaos Magic, my first book.  Also is a ton of exercise to build up and push energy around.  Yes I know I should have another done.  The key to all the techniques, it to progressively relax and really just keep expressing that love, directing it into the coat until it matches you.  Really, once you get to the place in trance, focus, and relaxation where you just know the coat is alive is the point to ask the coat to protect you.  The oil will generally sink into leather very very well.

Why Van Van Oil as a start?  Well first, its physically inoffensive.  This is very important if you want to have anyone around you, or you ride the train, go through a airport, etc.  If you are light on palmarosa oil, it has a lemony fresh smell.  The Second, it has alot of positive attributes.  From repelling evil, bringing good luck, changing bad luck to good luck, even opening roads.  These are all very positive things to have around you.

Want to make your own Van Van Oil
FROM LuckyMojo.com

  • 16 parts lemongrass oil
  • 8 parts citronella oil
  • 1 part vetivert oil
  • 1 part palmarosa oil
  • 1 part gingergrass oil

Therefore: In each 1/2 oz. bottle of VAN VAN OIL to be made up, place a pinch of dried lemongrass leaves a pinch of crushed pyrite crystals one full standard dropper-full of the above stock blend.

I have seen other recipes that look like

  •  5-10 parts lemongrass oil
  • 3-5 parts citronella oil
  • 2-3 parts vetiver root or oil
  • 1 part palmarosa
  • 1 part ginger grass

Palmarosa and gingergrass oil are generally harder to find. Vertiver is actually more commonly known as Khus-knus.  Generally the idea is to add "lucky" things to the mixture. Some people will substitute Lemon Verbana in New Orleans.  Generally, I love Ken's Van Van from http://alchemy-arts.com, just call him (773) 769-4970.

The thing is that, this kind of oiling and blessing can be done in other ways.  I will often sew a red wrapped High John Root into the lining near the bottom.  I love the High John.  Technically, this would be a "pocket piece".  High John generally is a great protection against being Hoodooed, and other spell work.  It is almost a herb of power through cleverness ( not so much brute force).  I love it.  Usually, I would  again pray over and push energy into the High John untill it really felts just alive.  I will oil this with Van Van Oil as well, and feed the High John at least once a week with some Van Van ( by re-oiling it and praying over it).  My prayer is usually a gratitude prayer for HOW Awesome the High John is, but straight energy work will work as long is it is regularly fed.  A tangental second benefit is that High John Helps with Money magic.  Opening doors while wearing your coat, does it get any better?

Later, I will sew or paint seals on the inner side of the Jacket.  Its pretty easy to keep the seals hidden, by unsewing the inside of a jacket using the material lining of the jacket ( once re-sewed) to do cover it up.  BE WARNED and be careful with the paint.  Test that out on a similar piece of leather, lest  you have a screwed up jacket.  That would be WORSE then Coffee abuse ( aka spilling it), or Liqueur abuse ( aka spilling it).  Destroying a nice leather coat has to be a sin in some religion.  Although, I have to be honest, I have seen other magicians go as far to paint Goetic seals on the outside of their jackets.  Really, I'd paint seals on the outside too (not Goetic ones though), but I actually have business meetings I have to go to.  Back in the day, I would paint up the outside of my motorcycle jackets with seals.  Fun days.  Really, if you go hit up Hands-On Chaos Magic: Reality Manipulation through the Ovayki Current, theres a ton more bits of information to work the jacket to make it even more talismanic.

Now, of course, I have a significant other, but there is no reason that enterprising magician could not use some of these ideas to project that bad girl or bad boy image using slightly different pleasant smelling oils.  What, you think only MEN wear trench coats.  Its sexy on all sexes and combinations there in.    Of course, I could see people using the same kind of technique on a purse they love, a wallet, almost anything ( although Sewing a High John to a wallet would be... weird ).

Have fun with it.  Post some other ideas in the comments.

Magic On the Go: Reclaiming that Lost time

Breaking the Clock, one limitation at a time
So I have to start riding the bus and the train again.  I am doing this not because I am poor, but for entirely philosophical reasons.   Its not easy to do this in NorthEast Ohio, it adds a bunch of commuting time, and generally is a pain in the ass.

Commuting time while driving should be dead time.  If you are doing meditations while driving,  please, please tell me you do not live in Ohio.    Commuting while on public transportation however, is usable time.

Almost any ( key words there almost), system of magic can be reasonably worked even while traveling.  Purists will REEL, FEIGN, and GASP, but I am not the first or only magician to come to this realization and back that realization up with evidence to support it.  Unfortunately that realization does not sell leather-bound books, nor does it sell $1000 dollar services.   Sure, Sure, Sure  we would all like a perfectly engraved circle in concrete at the basement.  Sure Sure Sure, I have a special place in my heart for leather, virgin parchment books,   and nothing beats a custom crafted Wand.... and certainly I love writing spells with my custom copper tipped bone fountain pen.  I love incense. Its easier to get good results with the props, solid materials help immensely but it is not the only way.

ADAPTATION to modern realities might require new methods.

But there really is a few realizations I think the general "magical" purists have to realize ( besides that the evidence does not back up the must do this this way).

  • Much Victorian and renaissance magic assumes a upper middle class, to wealth lifestyle.  Most people who practice magic are probably much closer to the poor lifestyle.  While previously to now, they probably could afford a separate practice area, those luxuries are getting harder.
  • Most magical systems can be compressed in experience to be done with only the mind, but to do so takes A GREAT DEAL of training
  • Modern psychological techniques CAN accelerate the needed training, off-setting the first point.
So before we get to doing Goetic work or the like in your mind, WHICH you fully can do ( and there has to be a lot of safties built in), and will be a topic of a different blog, lets cover some of the most difficult aspects when you start trying to reclaim the travel time and what types of magic are the easiest.

Starting Magical Work on the Commute
So for me doing magic while commuting, the easiest starting point is Mantra work.  This could be buddhist, hindu, or sigil mantra spellwork.   I find there is a couple issues that immediately arise.   There are some technical issues to overcome which I will talk about in a minute.   In the non-technical issues, there are a few.

  • First, You'll probably have the sensation of everyone is watching you.   Really, no one gives a crap, but that sensation is there.  To me this is a byproduct of the forbidden nature of magic within modern society.  It is the full on realization, in the face of other people, that magic is somehow wrong.  Its the hidden and seeping deadliness of the cultural normative values.  When you get that reaction, just laugh at yourself literally.   If you want to,  make it a game out of the exhibition of it, kinda like being naughty.  Really though, no one cares.  It took me a while to realize that.
  • Second, there are a host of memes about public transportation and how dangerous it is.   Lots of fear based conditioning.  It does not help, that they put up HUGE danger signs all around.  Fear + Fear + Fear.    Mostly that is a lie.  Now, crime does happen so we do have to talk about riding the environment.
  • Modern Cell phones and other media devices can make it pretty easy to tune out the environmental noise.

Mantra Commuting Method one
Once you get how to create sigilized mantras, and Hands On Chaos Magic has some techniques on how to do that, or  you could go and check out sigil mantra spellwork, or you could chose a pre-made mantra.   There are a couple technical points to cover, and some methods with pre-work setup will greatly assist the work.  My examples will be in Garageband, but you could easily work with Audacity and do similiar things.  Read the technical manual to get details and there are tons of tutorials on YouTube.

I like to spend a little time select music without WORDS ( thats very important) such as classical, trance/techno, recorded drumming, or even new age sounds.   The idea is to match the intention of the Mantra with the general type of music.

Now I will take that into Garageband or Audacity and two a couple interesting things.  First,  record the mantra into a second track.  Cut and paste or replicate it and PAN that all the way left.  Then take that first recording and lengthen and Deepen the mantra.  So its as if there is a whole different voice that takes alot longer for each section.  Set the pan on this track all the way left.    Make these two tracks slightly louder then the music, but not much.    Have a friend, preferably of the opposite sex with a voice you enjoy, record a 3 track that is has no panning that is just the mantra repeated over and over.  This track should not sync with the first track and should intentionally have a different timing.   If you can not find a person to record this track, you can hack up the recording to make it work ( but it takes a little practice, and tweaking in garage band).   Take the entire song, with all the tracks and duplicate the entire set of music so it repeats the mantra for at least 30 minutes.   If this doesn't make sense, bug me over email or watch a couple tutorials.  Once you do this once or twice, it will be easy to do this and make this recording in less then 20 minutes.

Export this 30 minute mantra bonanza to mp3 and put it on the phone/mp3 player.  This will serve as a great backdrop for the work.  I have done this with Sigil mantras, Ganesh mantras, tons of mantras.  The technique uses something from hypnosis akin to the Dual, Triple inductions.  Essentially, the off timing, and multiple voices will slightly confuse the brain pushing you into deeper trance states faster.  It also creates the illusion that there are more then one person chanting, leading to a sort of social reality where it is ok to this.

Now, the mantra work itself for commuting has to be done internally without vocalization.   A simple way to do this, is to really vibrate out a mantra once.   Notice how it feels and sounds.  In your mind, replicate the feeling and sound.   Do the mantra from the diaphragm, and then when you are internally trying this feel out the sounds in your diaphragm.  Mentally, make the mantra as loud as you possibly can.   Give it a rich texture when you say it inside your mind.   More is usually better.  Ham it up as you imagine it.  When it feels right, you are ready to do this during your commute.

So you get on the train or bus.   I usually start with a simple drawing down of light through me, and then let my body ride in the rhythm of the ride.  This is different then the Zen like focused no thoughts.  Instead, if you listen to the sound of the bus, and the flow and ebb of passengers.  The noise of the train.  Really listen to it without focusing on it.  Let it wash over you.  Accept it.  Be it.  Feel the tracks or road under you.   When it washes over you completely and feel yourself in that altered state,  Press play on your Mantra MP3 and set it on repeat.

Now, inside your mind, repeat the mantra while listening to the mp3.  Continue to let the environment wash over you.  I use it almost like a type of divination.  So if someone bumps you, let it wash over you, but perhaps there is some resistance to the mantra spell work.  I just keep going then.  Perhaps, you get distracted by a attractive member of the opposite sex, perhaps signifying conflicting desires. Again, let it wash over you keep going.  Now if your mantra is to meet a member of the opposite sex that you find attractive and they smile or flirt with you,  get on that, you've succeeded.  No Seriously, I mean it. Weirder things have happened in magic.  If a person, seriously disrupts your mantra work, maybe take it as a sign depending on what happens.   99% of the time, just let it wash over you and keep going.

If this happens while doing the mantra
The universe is seriously fucking with you
LAUGH With it.
If this happens while doing the mantra
The universe is seriously fucking with you
LAUGH With it.

If this happens while doing the mantra the universe is seriously fucking with you LAUGH With it.

For the most part, if you have commuted to your stop before, you have a good sense of time.  Because you have to get off the train or bus, you have to do this with your eyes open. Visually do the same thing, let the surroundings wash over you until your stop.  Kinda like riding all the senses.  Just go with the flow.

When you get off the bus or train, change the mp3 player or turn it off.  Stretch abit.  Now, forcefully   cut off from the surroundings.   Think about something else.

This technique also works well with walking although bike riding gets a little dicey.  DONT DO THIS WHILE DRIVING.  Seriously, I shouldn't have to say it, but I know someone will try it.

Now of course, if you would like something else to listen to while on the train or bus that is also extraordinarily helpful, you could download the full immersive mp3 below.
