Offerings part II: The Space-Time Quandary of Different Existence

Of course, the purely left hand path approach to all entities is that someone had to create it.  In fact, I heard this refrain uttered by multiple very high prominence PAGANS at a recent festival… and this tells you that, for the most part, Chaos Magic has won the hearts and minds of the pagan populace even though they still will throw around a lot of platitudes, and seem to hate calling themselves Chaos magicians (btw most Chaos magicians are somewhat agnostic, and wouldn’t make such a TRUTH claim).    Let’s again assume the assumptions:

  • The Spiritual Forces exist in some capacity outside of the individual mind. The religious magicians cry out, praise Jesus, but I am not finished yet.
  • The Spiritual Forces are not real, in the sense that they do not share the spatial, temporal, nor physical characteristics which define physical reality. While my assumption is that they exist, they cannot exist in any way comparable to our existence, meaning calling them “real” falsely implies anthropological traits that we ourselves apply.
  • Spiritual forces require some tie-in to the material plane to function and work in the material world. Usually this is a human magician, but certain classes of spirits may work independent of people by being tied to certain places, plants, etc. The religious will take open offense to this assumption, but in test after test after test, this is how in practice I have seen it work 99.9999999999999% of the time. That’s a hell of a lot of 9’s and when you take the romanticism out of the equation, I have kinda found this to be the case with everyone I have ever trained. BTW, that does not mean, we might not start aka at birth with some ties to certain spirits at birth. So maybe there is room for spirituality after all! :)
  • Spirits probably do not have an intelligence that looks or functions in a way similar to a human intelligence (although the dead might, but even then Time is an issue).

Notice, no where in this do I say it’s impossible that we created deity; it just does not matter.    If you’re going to say we created deity in platitudes, you should back it up by saying we don’t have a soul at the same time and ANY metaphor for anything spiritual is just that, just a metaphor working on your brain.  That’s what the Church of Satan does, and I can respect that.    So let’s go back to these assumptions.   One can, right off the bat, argue the Jungian perspective and claim we create them so they do not exist.

However, that negates the observed result of physical offerings actually producing better results.  The mere fact that so many people can claim that physical offerings enhance results is the major problem to this idea.    Either we are all corrupting our Meta-belief system with an insidious mind virus (that offerings are required)  or the Jungian principle of “all in your head” simply fails to model the phenomenon correctly.  Likewise, if the biological exchange model was sufficient, service to a spirit should qualify as enough to get suitable results (btw service does enhance results too, just not as greatly as physical offerings).  This quandary suggests something more is afoot then the models allow.

If the entities are existent, outside of the individual mind (this does not imply a platonic structure of spirit, merely that informational patterns exist outside the individual mind), as an assumption and that that informational pattern exists in a different time space reference point (if it even has a Space-Time reference point), then what?

The Space-Time Quandary of Different Existence
Spirits seem to, in general, only partially affect our existence via the proxy of magicians/priests/shamans (outside of a few spirits which we will cover).  The reason, if you assume they exist in a state outside of our Time-Space continuum, how can they influence, with any meaningful results, our Space-Time continuum?  They would, in their natural state, probably have very little understanding of Time-Space aka Cause and Effect.   This would be a big claim, but consider the following:

Most African Traditional Religions require good character, but even a cursory poll of people would tell you that so many houses in Vodou, Palo and Santeria FUCK their members, or would be members, that it is CRAZY.  How can the spirits just watch and let it happen, consistently, it’s like they show no moral values?

Angels abound and yet the WICKED seem to constantly get ahead?
What the fuck, where is the smiting from God?  Whole religions based on serving the poor, and yet the truly wicked get away with literal murder?

Even crazy demons, shit why doesn’t shit seem to self-destruct more often, I mean really, if they had full control, it should be a much worse shitstorm, but its NOT.

Name a tradition where this does not apply.  You can claim it’s Divine Will, and I will say bullshit, that it’s Divine Will that someone gets molested or shit like that.  Norse, anything… its easier to explain this by saying they have NO knowledge of the events because of the Space-Time divide, and are limited by the perceptual basis of the people who allow them access to this world via MIND (we will get back to the physical offerings in a second).

There are so many examples of this idea.  Now add a magician to the mix and BOOM… results.  Why?

A simple answer to the above problems is that spirits do not exist in our Time-Space
continuum, and thus have very little knowledge of what actually goes on in this world until they have a Space-Time juncture point.    This, of course, means the magician acts as the Space-Time conjuncture point in part.    If you follow the logic of the Space-Time dissonance, it also follows why two spirits of the same time of spirit can exist in different spaces at exactly the same time.   Because the spirit does not have any sort of time constraints on it; because it’s existence does not involve the same kind of time structure’s ours do.    You could correctly say all spirit-based magic is a type of Time/Space magic.    In fact, if a person was so inclined to read Bardon, they might even agree with that.

Not only do we have a biological imperative of exchange, but the exchange provides a physical anchor in the Space-Time continuum for which a spirit CAN act.

Now of course, if you were really wanting to argue the assumption that they exist outside of the individual mind, you probably could, but we have a few other unique occurrences which, again, tend to exist at least outside the individual mind.

  • In independent work with an entity,  people will find out that the same entity requests the same types of things (this is with no research on the entity).  For instance, Diana Paxson at Convocation 2015 mentioned one situation where two independent sources within the guild she works with determined the same colors for an entity.  I have heard many people working with “unverified” personal gnosis (ask me why I HATE this term with unmitigated passion), come to the same conclusions independently with no correspondence about either emerging or lesser known entities.
  • In preparing an Astral temple, with no instruction on any details in the temple, I was correctly able to identify the major themes of the temple, and structure of the temple for the Gentleman For Jupiter group.   I was not given any additional information, there was no way I could know that.  I have seen this similar experience happen several times to many many people.
  • Real magical Practitioners and devotees can almost always see/understand if another person is seriously working with an entity that they share in their personal framework.
  • In divinations, entities will pop up that the magician has no connection with or pre-knowledge of, yet when the person getting the reading is questioned, most of the time, they will say they have been investigating or have a relationship with that entity.

There are many many examples of these sorts of data points that pop up.  They should not be ignored or trivialized.  The idea that spirits existing outside of our Space-Time coordinates, and needing a bridge, still fits.  So that is the first stage of talking about altars and offerings, spirits need a Space-Time bridge.

This covers why spirits would make proxy points to magicians, right, but magicians are generally a completely unstable lot.  I mean, we go from point to point, concentrating and balancing different priorities, rarely is our intention focused in one direction.  This means that at best, a well trained magician is a very short focused bridge and if you work possession work like we do in Vodou, that is exactly what happens with a short Space-Time bridge that is complete.

Understand the bridge is not just to the mind of the magician, as the mind is very close to the nature of spirit.  It is the physical body of the magician that ACTS as the Space-Time bridge as called in through the use of mind connection and active imagination.  Intention dictates energy direction and characteristics in the body.  Rarely will the magician be able to stay so in SYNC with an information pattern for a really long time, that it is a reliable talisman (but we will get to some examples maybe in part 4 or 5 at this point).

So it’s time in my extended thought explanation just to state a couple more assumptions about talismans, before I can move on.

First, LOTS of people get lots of results with talismans and they seem to have an outside of mind effect.  Again, we cannot fairly dismiss that datapoint.

From tons and tons of experimental data, from tons and tons of magicians, let me state that most of the magicians will agree that talismans can hold an information pattern or intention which has a strength of signal.  Both the clarity and strength of the talismans depends on a lot of different factors beyond the scope of these blog posts but that said, it means that physical options can be imbued with energy patterns.  These physical things, while not as powerful as direct magician involvement, certainly must be more stable as they do not self-generate opposing intention vectors.  AKA they FIX and hold the same intention, and within the scope of the argument, act as a Space/Time bridge with greater stability.   Clearly this, in a nutshell, explains physical altars and talismans, but does not yet get to the offering parts. Although that last part of physical offerings because ambivalent, depending on how good the magician is at pushing energy/intention and binding it to physical objects.  So for example, my ancestors really do like the vibration of Coffee, but they will always accept me performing Reiki work on and at the altar, to give them energy to work with.  It gets bound into their reservoir (the altar) to pull from.   Physical offerings work in a similar way, in that if you are using those offerings on their Space-Time bridge, they can drain the energy or the capacity for amplitude to themselves.

You can try this with a friendly spirit you have a relationship with.   Create a physical space.  Give them a food offering.  Tell them you want to understand.  Save some of the food offering  (and do not place it down on the altar).  Place some of the food on the altar.  Notice the difference.  Unless the spirit is trying to be nice to you, the food might taste bland, or just something about it off.  Respectfully, you have to ask the entity to do this.  Sometimes, with the dead, you might get sick from the food.. so be prepared to banish.   Make clear your intention is that you want to understand what happens with the food.  IF a spirit won’t work with you in this capacity (aka get permission), ask a different one.  If you try this, you’ll understand exactly what I mean.   The only problem being that the spirit might give you some of their energy in exchange, ask them not to..  (if they like you that’s how it should be, but that won’t help you learn in this case).

This also gets to WHY certain foods for certain spirits.  Simply put, spirits are informational patterns in a way, and as such, only certain patterns of physical material increase the resonance of the spirit itself.  That is why certain spirits will request certain foods and offerings once a bridge is made.  They are telling you what will add to their spiritual amperage to influence the physical world because not all resonances will.  That is probably a simplification, but with some thought it will take you a VERY long way.

Offerings Part 1: The Biology of Exchange.

Before I can talk about the offerings and spirits in an intelligent way, I have to rant a little. Just gloss over the Rant, I promise it will get better.

Jonathan Z. Smith writes in Imagining Religion:

“...while there is a staggering amount of data, phenomena, of human experiences and expressions that might be characterized in one culture or another, by one criterion or another, as religion — there is no data for religion. Religion is solely the creation of the scholar’s study. It is created for the scholar’s analytic purposes by his imaginative acts of comparison and generalization. Religion has no existence apart from the academy.”

I am not a fan of religion. Of course, when the offerings topic made the blogosphere, I promised to eventually write something on it. Most of the people commenting on offerings with spirits raised spiritual, and mostly religious, points supporting their position followed by antecedent personal evidence. Let me be perfectly honest and blunt from my opinion: If you are combining hoodoo techniques with ceremonial magic, you are a chaos magician (or at least proving the point that chaos magicians are trying to make). It is the reason, that I say, there's no point in calling myself a chaos magician… and don’t. The arguments were already made and seemingly won.

The reliance of religion is a call to authority, again in my opinion. It is the moral equivalent of do this because I said so; and unfortunately that appeals to many a reader and consumer. No I am not picking on any one person, or don’t think I am. Really, the reliance on that is intellectually weak and at best historical romanticism, since history and source materials are at best the propaganda of the winners of wars cultural and physical. I know people are producing more books on tying magic to religion; and to that I say, bullshit. They are still good people, and I enjoy their company, but that is the product of a cultural age before ours, it is not inherent to the age we are spawning from. That DOES not mean that respect, and respect while working with the spiritual forces, is not critical.

For me religions, even in the pagan circles, are systems of social control with political beliefs embedded into the underlying current of the religion itself. I do not see this as the same thing as spirituality. For those who think that that this definition is not true, look at your average Wiccan coven, druid meeting, or even pagan gathering. It is group dynamics around ethical codes and enforced social dynamics. While this is part of interacting with “spirit”, religion is only part of the culture which creates it. Statistically, LOTS of people are separating religion and magic, as magic has a tendency to function differently as an emergent properties of the age magic is operating in. Guess what, there is whole lot of people getting a lot of results working in a non-religious fashion. The continual, and often historical, romanticism backed up by intellectual rigidity, is pretty annoying, and why I just don’t get into these debates too often - but I am feeling feisty and I have thought about offerings a great deal.

I am in the offering camp, but why, given that diatribe. No we don’t have to rely on two notions that fall under the religious, it just works better with no mechanism suggested, and the "I said so", or "because the spirits want this". These are all religious claims, and that is perfectly ok, but the claims limit some expressions of magic, as I will get into.

I have to state some huge assumptions for the rest of this blog post. I am stating the assumptions up front, if you disagree with the assumptions, well the end conclusions and ideas also will not follow.

It's in these last two assumptions, that we can start a base of a reasonable model of why offerings work, and why some magical systems do not (contrary to opinion-use offerings). A model is not fact, nor TRUTH, it is a working model. AKA it's my reasonable opinion based on objective criteria, my reading, and my experience of the spiritual forces. If a model is helpful, keep it, use it, cradle it. If not, don’t use it.

AKA I am not saying this is The Way, I am saying this is one model for understanding that does not involve historical romanticism and calls to authority claims.

Part of the Model 1: The Biology of Exchange

The first real hurdle is unless you show very sociopathic tendencies, which most people up until the modern age did not (and those people would be weeded out), we have an innate sense of exchange. Of course, in the modern age the sociopath can work the people, to play off this notion. It is so critical to how our human cultures work, and now our understanding of how primate culture works. Functionally, this is a biological imperative and most mammals show some sort of exchange logic (even rats).

Exchange is really the connection point of mammalian consciousness. A dearly departed friend, Dave, used to say it was the Eros initiative (love for other sentient things). Mammals actually tend to bond in this way, and these connection points form the basis of, well, everything. Guess what does not do this: insects and reptiles. So we are talking about an evolutionary bonding process, not very early. This manifests itself in the concept of exchange, or if you like, in the Runic studies department Gebo. Simply put, if there is a biological imperative to connect, there also must be a mechanism to make it worthwhile. So we trade favors for what we need, and share what we have a surplus of with people less fortunate. Culturally, the notion of trading probably goes back to chimps - where they will trade sex for meat. It's what we do.

We cannot, in the slightest, expect something that runs so deep in us not be reflected in our dealings with the spiritual world. In fact, most cultures DO have offerings (higher level magicians aside, which I might get to in part 2 or 3). The religious would say, yep that proves the point, but what it really demonstrates is how culture (of which religion is part) is dictated by our own biological leanings. Of course we trade with the spiritual world, it's what we do.

A counter to this is, of course, physical offerings and not just service offerings. Service offerings, or real devotion, would in fact meet this biological criteria. In this, I am just getting warmed up.

This marks about 1400 words, so tune in NEXT week for Part 2:

Crossroads Uncrossing: Candy and Red Palm Oil

starlight.jpgThis is a specific technique to remove bad juju or negative energy.  A few things about this: this is clearly not “traditional Vodou” so leave it alone if you are going to go there and be like that.  It is however a technique that is derived directly from something I have seen done 1000 times in a couple Ifa houses, by a few conjure folk in Chicago, and have done it a 1000 times myself - although the entities prayed to were slightly different. The Conjure people would bust out psalms asking God to take care of it. The Ifa house I saw do this would pray in front of their warriors ( Eshu); I will pray to Legba or Kalfu depending on the situation.

What you need:
  • A brown paper bag
  • Red palm oil
  • Red and white circular peppermint candles
  • Rum
  • Some coins
  • 3 chocolate candy bars.
  • Cigar maybe...

What you should do:

Rip the brown paper bags into squares large enough so that you can place a circle mint and fully tie the ends of the paper bag, leaving none of the mint exposed.

With the red palm oil,  draw an equilateral (aka solar cross)  across the brown paper bag square.  Don’t be stingy, you should clearly see the the cross.  Place the red starlight mint in the center of the cross (the lines of this cross should be perpendicular, and parallel to the edges of the square). It should look something like this.

Now, take the paper, and wrap up the mint in the paper and red palm oil.  Try to tie it away from you if at all possible.  You have to make sure you can’t see the mint.  The palm oil, eh, it just gets everywhere no matter what you do. It will seep into the brown bag too. Just run with it.

So here is some I made over the weekend.
Examples of the three I made, when I did a bunch of these on
Saturday for various people, universally, people were like
damn, this totally works.

Now once this is tied up, they look like this. Really The string is optional, but it does add to the binding if the problem is more severe ( of course, if it is done with intention).
If you really want to get pretty about it, you can wrap this with red string too, but make sure you wrap and tie the mini packet in the direction of casting out (aka away from you, not wrapping towards you). Really, the magical intention is to really make sure whatever you bind up in the packet stays the hell away from you.

You need to make 3 of them.

I usually do this part in one of two ways, depending on how I feel about things.  First, I just pray and pray and pray that all negativity will be removed and put into the packet.
Two things: I am praying to Lwa yes, but I have seen this done with a Christian, and have seen people doing this before their warriors in Ifa.   As you are praying, scrape the packet down and over your whole body as if you are scraping off the dirt, negative energy, and cursework into the packet.    Its beyond the scope of this blog post, but you really have to know how to pray and connect to the spirit if you are using this method.   Prayers without real connection, well they won’t do much.

A second way I will do this is purely from an energetic model for this part.  I usually show this way to my students.  So in this, if you have any sensitivity to types of energy, you just mediate and scrape the packet down and away, pushing (and having the packet) pull the negative energy, cursework, evil and just icky into the packet.    If you use all five of your senses and keep your focus, this usually works pretty well.
Why yes this is Andrieh, Creating the Mojo in a park by
A remote crossroads, Snow, bah, it just makes it real.

You do this with 3 packets.    Obviously we live in an over-policed and litigious society, so it isn't always possible to walk out where you are and chuck them into the crossroads, so I bring Ziploc bags with me.  I try really hard to not touch them after I “power” them up, instead dropping them in the bag.   Then I drive to a remote crossroads.

Now, it's a little weird, cause we live in the modern age with cars and stuff.  What I do is park the car on the far side of the crossroads.   Stop: offer the crossroads some Rum, the chocolate and some coins at the first corner; walk away from your car in a cross walk.  Ask the spirits of the crossroads to take your troubles away.  Offer a shot of rum, chocolate and coins at the second corner and ask again.  Now do the same thing at the 3rd crossroads: offer a shot of rum, chocolate, and coins, but this time, walk right out into the middle of the crossroads (so diagonally through the middle towards your car).  Throw down the “Evil packets” with some coins, and walk over them but do not step on them.   Keep walking, get in your car, do not look back (cover your mirror if you have to).  Keep Driving.  Put on happy music and take a different way home that includes, loop backs and some driving over the same block randomly to create loops in the route (all that throws any negative spirits out). Do not go back to this crossroads for at least a day, longer is better. Ideally, your route home will have lots of going in circles and loopbacks. If a negative spirit tries to follow your "scent back", often they will get caught in a loopback. Sometimes, the old superstition of crossing running water is also helpful, I have found. The running water essentially makes a sort of flow of energy/vibration that erases your "scent". That's the explanation from a energy model pov. Essentially, it just makes it a little harder to track you down.

This is pretty effective for a fast uncrossing, but it does work better if you have relationships with, say, CROSSROAD Spirits.  It has worked well for me on the point of Legba, and Kalfu (for the hard hitting ones).  It can be augmented in ways that are probably outside the scope of the blog post.  While this works great for almost all negative enchantments,  if you have a negative spiritual attack, it seems to in practice depending on how committed or smart the spirit is.  Sure, they might get tricked for a while, but if they are truly dedicated, well they will keep going.  Works for most, just not all (Caveat given).

A Deep Relaxation Technique, your ticket to great sleep

Generally, sleep is one of the most underrated experiences and it is becoming clear that it is  evolutionary critical.  We are getting a closer  closer understanding of sleep. In a recent study they note:
“found that metabolic waste products of neural activity were cleared out of the sleeping brain at a faster rate than during the awake state. This finding suggests a mechanistic explanation for how sleep serves as a restorative function, in addition to its well-described effects on memory consolidation. "
More or less the later parts of the study deal with this idea of memory cleanup.   In computer terms, we might call this defragging.  So why would I post on sleep as a magician.  First, I want to, and thats that.  Second, it is a great place where magic, the occult and the psychological overlap.  You can be a hard core atheist and this will help you.

Of course, most people do not get great sleep.  You know what the number one reason for that, is that people are stuck thinking about things too much ( yep they do).  In general, our society creates lots of reasons for worry, and not a lot of reasons toward health.  If you can get 7-8 hours of sleep, that will help mood and cognitive function.  If you can not get that amount, let’s cheat a little.  Let’s cheat even if you can get that amount of sleep. We can help the brain’s memory cleanup by doing a meditation right before sleeping.  Sure, I have often posted about banishing before sleeping, and giving a few interrupt techniques.

The truth is, that even if you have a really well developed banishing, progressive relaxation might work more efficiently.  By “efficiently”, I do not mean faster, I mean much greater bank for the buck.  Generally, this will take 20-30 minutes but I guarantee it’s worth it.

First things first, lie down.  Obvious I know, try to lay flat on your back. Place your pillow behind your head and the corners of the pillow on each shoulder.  This cradles your pillow around your head and neck and is far more ergonomically correct.  One of the differences, between progressive relaxation and fast mental reactions, is actually your body.

Start to breathe deeply.  At least 5-8 seconds in and out, with no pause between breaths.  On inhale, just inhale focus on one muscle of your body relaxing.  On exhale, focus on one muscle of your body relaxing and breathing out the stress.  Imagine what that stress looks like, feels like, sounds like, and expel it with your breath using all of your psychic imagination.   It does not matter exactly what it looks, feels, sounds, tastes, etc like, just that you know it for the tension, negativity or stress in that muscle.

Try this with a finger muscle to practice.   You might have all sorts of body, sensory, and other reactions.  Stay with one muscle.  Now you will get to the point, that muscle and area feels pretty good.  There may be a visual and auditory component, just keep going.

Most of the time, you are releasing negative energy as well as physical stress.   Try this again to practice on a more troublesome area (lots of people have problems with the neck and shoulder, so try some of those muscles).  The one key I learned, is just to keep focusing on the muscle till it relaxes.  Inhale relax, exhale imagine breathing the tension out.  Each breath should make it feel like the muscle actually melts.  If you add that visual idea of melting with the exhale, this will usually go great.  It could take 20-30 breaths and focus for one muscle.  Read that again, 20-30 breathes for one muscle.

I like to start with the parts of the body in the most contact with the mattress.   So this for me is the lower shoulders, and gluteus maximus.   I will do the exact meditation until it feels like those muscles are liquefying in the bed.   Then I will continue to focus on additional muscles around those muscles.  The key is one muscle at a time.  Really work one muscle at a time with your mind. Once you get the practice to down, you can do deep relaxation starting from your toes on up or from your head on down. This makes it easier to keep track of where your muscles are.

Usually by the time I have the neck and shoulders done, I am asleep.   I tend to carry my stress there.   What you will notice, is that as you are doing more and more muscles, other muscles will melt and relax too.  Just try to get through as many as you can.   Of course, if you start thinking about things beside the muscle, just breathe them out with the tension and stress. Yes imagine them getting expelled.   Often, I find it great to put on an oil diffuser in the room I sleep too, so that negative energy getting expelled just gets transformed by the essential oil (that I usually bless).  Of course, I will use blessed crystals, do banishing work in the room I sleep, put down camphor in some water, so any negative energy I release does not stick around.

You could couple this with things like a happiness meditation once you get this down.
Imagine on inhale that you breath in what you understand as condensed happiness, and use all of your 5 senses.  Pull that right into the muscle. On exhale, push out any negativity and tension.  Keep going with one muscle until it melts.  Use your five senses to see and feel it melt.  This is a simplified exercise from the Shapeshifting Course (I go into more detail in the course), and some of it is suggested by Hands On Chaos Magic.  Of course, this is a fast blog post, but it’s enough to really make some changes.  If you want something a little more challenging, try this (start off with the relaxation first).

For most people, you may notice you sleep much better, and notice improved energy and possibly some health benefits (definitely emotional improvement).   It’s well work the pre-sleep investment.
